Coronavirus in DC Area and Other Illnesses that Cause People to Cough: What it Means for Seniors
|
Cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) are starting to appear in the DC metro area. So far, 9 people in our area have tested positive for the virus, including an 80+ year old man from Fairfax City, after traveling home from a Nile river cruise.
Since the coronavirus started in Wuhan, China, it has infected more than 107,000 people globally, killing more than 3,600, including 17 in the U.S. More than 60,000 people have recovered from the virus. Nationwide, there have been 437 cases of the virus. The Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering has a comprehensive map that is tracking global cases of coronavirus in real time.
Every time you turn on the TV, open the newspaper, or surf the web, you encounter information about the coronavirus. Hand sanitizer is sold out everywhere and water and other staples are flying off the shelves at the grocery stores, Target and Walmart, and Costco. The stock market even took a serious plunge this week, in large part, according to the experts, due to the hysteria around the coronavirus. I will
explain why you should remain calm, and discuss other reasons that seniors (and people of any age) may be coughing and what can be done.
